Verizon Speed Test: A Quick How-To Guide

Verizon Speed Test: A Quick How-To Guide

The Verizon Speed Test is an online bandwidth test that Verizon offers to its paying broadband customers to check their Internet speed. If you're a Verizon FiOS customer, checking your bandwidth with the Verizon SpeedTest is probably the best way to verify the MPS or Gbps numbers you're looking for on your monthly bills. If Verizon is not your ISP, there is little point in using this speed test. See the bottom of this page for more information, as well as some general comments on the accuracy of this test.

The Verizon Speed Test: How to Use It

Verizon uses the Ookla hosted platform which you may have seen on some of the routes you have driven so the process may be familiar to you:

  • Go to Verizon.com. No need to sign in or use your Verizon account.
  • Click or press the red button to start the test. Don't worry if nothing happens for a few seconds, it will take time to load.
  • Download test and download test wait until. The entire process should take less than a minute.

To perform this test, Verizon sends and receives random data to and from your computer and uses basic math to determine your internet speed in MPS. After completing the test, you will be redirected to the short page. There you can finalize, upload and download the results. If you regularly check your internet speed, you can log it. This is a good idea if you're looking to switch back to Verizon due to support or slow speeds.

When (and not) to use the Verizon Speed Test

The Verizon Fios Speed Test is really useful if: a) you're a Verizon customer, and b) you're not looking for a "real world" test. As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, Verizon's speed test does a great job of making sure you're getting the bandwidth you're paying for. However, what you don't know is that the platform you get by streaming or downloading software from Navalfix in a very short time probably isn't too low for you either.

For a more realistic test, consider an HTML5 speed test hosted by a non-ISP such as TestMynet, SpeedOfMe, or Bandwidth with recommended places to test. Check out 5 Rules for More HTML5 Internet Flashing Tests and 5 Most Accurate Internet Speed Tests to get the most out of your bandwidth tests. If you're still not sure which way to go with the Verizon Fios Speed Test, check out the Internet Speed Test Tests for a summary of the testing process and what to look out for.
